It’s Only Rock and Roll, But My Aching Skin!

 

While one may think that Sheryl Crowe, Avril Lavigne or Gwen Stefani wake up looking as good as they do, think twice. A rock and roll schedule is not 9-5. There are late nights, heavy traveling and fast food on the road. The skin is the first tell tale that this lifestyle can easily lend itself to premature aging. The reality is the skin loves two things, water and oxygen. In the world of music there are many pleasures but water and oxygen are not it! Air travel quickly robs the skin of H20 and O2 and the alternative road travel creates free radical damage from all the exposure to pollution. While the skin is under havoc the bigger challenge is the artists’ image is what sells the music. And let’s not forget about all of the “wanna be’s” (yes, that was me once…) who live as if they too lived on the road. This skin care 101 is for all of you.

Creating the glamorous stage persona is causing the skin to be under stress. Bright lights, big cities begin a vicious circle, of fatigue and from this; poor choices are made. For instance, if you’re tired coffee would be the first choice to perk you up but this also robs the skin of water. Sugar offers a jolt to the body and also causes inflammation to the skins cells. This cellular damage shows up as fine lines, the skin looks dull and ashen, confusing rashes appear and for some the onset of adult acne. The good news is that the skin responds rather quickly to TLC. Tender includes touch and massage and facials are great healers. Love to sleep as with a good seven hours, the body is rejuvenated. Care about what goes into your body and nourish it from the inside out. Keep the cells hydrated with lots of purified water or reverse osmosis water (Penta is a good choice as is Dansani) and by eating fresh fruits and vegetables the skin is fueled with hydration and anti-oxidants. So in short, better sleep and diet are the cure-alls. Sounds easy…?

When you can’t sleep because of schedule demands or lifestyle then alcohol may seem a perfect companion. But in fact it is a stimulant and alcohol can make it very hard to sleep well. A lack of shut-eye causes the hormone cortisol to kick in and this can cause some hormonal imbalances which relate to the skin aging prematurely. Here are a few ways to help the body to unwind even after the stress and excitement of a highly charged day and night. Instant sleep relief can be found with Melatonin which is a good supplement to take as it not only helps you to sleep better, but also helps the body adjust to new time zones. Other options are herbal teas that act as sleep aids such as Chamomile, Kava and Valerian Root. By sleeping you can break the pattern of using coffee to carry you in the day. Instead there are great energizing teas like Green tea and Guarana tea which provide anti-oxidants and release caffeine slowly.

You are awake, have had your tea, now what? Another way to recharge the skin is through exercise. Remember that the skin is your largest organ. When the body feels right so does your skin. Exercise enhances the blood circulation and helps release toxins from the body. If exercise is not an option then a stimulating body gel put on the body to awaken it works well to. Many are made with herbs such as peppermint, cinnamon and Guarana extract. Contrast therapy works great to detox and revive the skin. This is a water therapy used in many European spas to help heal bodily disease. You can do this at home or a hotel by taking a hot bath with a mineral soak or Epsom salts and then following with a cold rinse. The contrast of temperatures works wonders. As does a good cold morning splash of water on the skin! Another great trick is taking a spoon and put it in the freezer or fridge for a few minutes. Then apply an eye gel around the eyes and use the cool spoon on top to massage away puffiness. And remember the skin loves water. After any skin treatment have a glass.
