Music Runners
is there a reason pro runners and avid runners don’t use ipods?
I’ve notice running through the park that most of the runners that look like they run ALOT don’t usualy have ipods or music is it cause they just don’t need it or is it not good to listen to music.
Some people consider it a crutch, or something that distracts them too much from their running and the people around them.
It’s usually viewed as a dissociative technique, allowing someone to focus on things other than their running. More “serious” runners tend to be more associative — they’re more constantly focused on the nuances of their running, breathing, etc., and wouldn’t really be listening to music much if they had it on.
For what it’s worth, studies have found that elite marathoners tend to use a mix of associative and dissociative strategies.
For those who are competitive, headphones also remain banned in competition, so many train without them (though some major competitors like Ryan Hall still do). The ruling actually initially came about due to concerns about electronic coaching that could occur, but it would still apply to things used solely for music, too. Anyway, if people need to race without them, they often learn to train without them too, since it’s critical they learn to maintain pace without the guide of a regular music beat and so on.
The rule that supposedly banned headphones from USATF events (which includes most marathons, half marathons, etc.) was recently rescinded for those who aren’t competing in the front, for what it’s worth.
The main thing to be concerned about if you wear headphones is that you remain able to respond to any emergency that could arise, especially if you’re in heavily trafficked areas. Open ear headphones at low volume can be a good compromise. Every now and then runners do get hit by a car or something that they should have heard coming up behind them but didn’t.
