The Greatest Male Singers of All Time Pt. 1
There have been many great male singers in the history of pop music it is hard to really just pick a few. The idea of what is considered “good” singing is something that is hard to quantify, Leonard Cohen, who I consider a great singer, does not have a typically good voice, but he has a powerful voice, perfectly suited for the songs he sings. Roy Orbison has a strange, powerful baritone voice that can switch to an almost child-like falsetto at the drop of a hat. Some people may find his voice difficult to listen to, like a loud train horn in their ears, not as naturally beautiful as someone like Frank Sinatra’s voice. Nonetheless, all of these singers are great artists with unique voices and have greatly influenced many generations of singers and songwriters.
Roy Orbison
Even Elvis Presley and Bono have praised Roy Orbison’s voice as one of the most distinct and powerful they had ever heard. The “Caruso of Rock,” as some have called him, Roy Orbison was born in Vernon, Texas to a hard luck family. He began to learn many different styles of music on his guitar, from Hank Williams country ballads to rhythm and blues, Tex-Mex and Zydeco. Orbison played a few forgettable bands that helped break him into the industry but it wasn’t until “Only the Lonely” in 1960 that people began to stand up and take notice of Orbison’s writing and singing skills. The operatic stylings of the music and Orbison’s baritone that would sometimes reach unbelievably high notes made it a smash single and Orbison was a household name. His career stagnated in the 70s but he came back with the smash hit and last album “Mystery Girl.” His influence can be seen in the films of David Lynch and in much of the songwriting and production of T-Bone Burnett
Otis Redding
The king of the American soul singers, Otis Redding was one of the most emotive and powerful singers, capable of making his listener truly feel the words he was singing. His death just a month before his biggest hit, and arguably greatest song “{Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” was a true tragedy. Otis Redding had the amazing talent of being able to cover songs and truly make them his own, from the Beatles’ “Day Tripper” to Sam Cooke’s “Chain Gang.” His posthumous record “The Dock of The Bay” is seen as one of the classic soul albums and is often placed as one of the greatest albums of all time. Redding’s emotional voice will never be lost, despite his early death.
