Copyright Music Rules
March 2nd, 2010

What are the copyright rules in the U.S. on sampling or recreating international music?
I’m a music producer and have used samples from songs outside of the united states. I’m not sure how the rights on the samples work.
The law is pretty vauge when it comes to sampling music. I heard something like as long as the sample is longer than 15 seconds then its ok to use. You have to be careful though, the Beastie Boys got sued because they sampled a jazz flute players work and that sample was no more than 5 seconds long. Personally I don’t agree with sampling unless you receive written permission from the artist/musician.
