Why Cars May Not Be as Good as They Used To
Remember the 1969 Volkswagen Beatle? Years later, the Volkswagen Beatle has maintained its shape for the most part, though nowadays the Volkswagen Beatle has a newer look to it and a fresh coat of paint. But still, nothing compares to the original. They just don’t make cars like they used to.
In today’s society, many (if not all) of the new cars that are manufactured come with all sorts of neat electrical devices. For instance, I remember when my father bought my mom her first brand new car back in 1996. It had a remote control starter so that you could stand in the living room and start the car’s engine to heat up or cool down the car on cold or hot days. It also had leather seats that automatically went forwards and backwards with the push of a button, power steering, power windows, power locks and a cd player. Cars from the 1950s and 1960s didn’t have all of the fancy gadgetry that we tend to put into our vehicles now.
Even since the mid 1990s, technology has advanced, and that has spilled over into the automotive industry. For instance, it’s not impressive to have a single cd player. My Jeep alone has a single cd opening that holds and plays up to 6 different cds. However, I don’t really use my cd player as much anymore. Rather, I have a device that plugs into the smoking outlet in my car out of which I play the thousands of songs that are stored on my iPod. It also seems like most people have some sort of GPS system in place. The price of GPS units have come down considerably over time, which has made GPS technology available to more people. For instance, my boyfriend has a portable GPS unit that he purchased a few months back that he can take in and out of his car. I must say that it is really neat to have someone (a voice) telling you how to get to and from a place as well as telling you where in the world you are if you are lost.
Parents are also loving the technological age when it comes to vehicles because now they can just pop a DVD into the dvd player in their car so that the kids have something to keep themselves entertained for long trips. But all of this being said, there are still problems to be had with newer vehicles which makes me sometimes wonder whether or not older cars were a little better. For instance, in the event of an emergency where your car is turned off and you need to get out in a hurry, you would have to break the window because it wouldn’t work to roll down otherwise where as in the past you could physically roll it down yourself. Could it be that cars are too “electrical” now? I can’t tell you how many times I have heard of people complaining about how their “check engine” light keeps coming on. It’s almost like all of these gadgets in our cars make us more paranoid!
